Wowza Media continues its efforts to migrate the Wowza Streaming Engine software to the current Long Term Support (LTS) version of the Java platform. The new version of Wowza 4.9.0 is built using Java 17 libraries (unlike the previous version of Wowza 4.8.28 built on Java 11) and supports both Java 17 and Java 21. Moreover, Java 21 is included in the software installation pack and its presence is required to run the installation script.

Changing the Java version led to updating a significant number of third-party libraries used in Wowza. The full list of libraries is published at the link Wowza Streaming Engine 4.9.0 Library Changes

Updating third-party libraries is also necessary to eliminate possible security problems with the components of the Wowza Streaming Engine Manager web management interface, which is especially important for users with open access to the interface from the Internet.

Must be noted that when using any third-party libraries that were not originally included in the Wowza distribution, the update can and will most likely lead to problems with their functioning or with the health of the Wowza Streaming Engine as a whole. All third-party components must be pre-adapted to work with new versions of Java libraries.

In addition to the Java update, the new release includes several fixes and new functionality relevant to specific WSE use cases.
